Eva Road
Eva Road is a short street connecting Highway 427 with The West Mall, a block north of Bloor Street West. One might be tempted to think that, like many streets in our cities, Eva was the relative of a local developer, or perhaps a local politician or historic figure, but that is not the case. Eva actually should be spelled EVA, because it’s an acronym for Etobicoke Voters Association.
EVA was formed by a group of ratepayers attempting to elect municipal candidates who they believed would take action on Etobicoke’s water situation, which left sections of the township almost completely dry during the summer.
In the December 3, 1951 municipal election, EVA spent $345 campaigning for specific candidates, and were successful in electing W.V. Muir as deputy reeve, and Charles Devlin and Walter Smith as councillors. Reeve Beverley Lewis was elected by acclamation and one other councillor, William Hodgson, was re-elected without EVA’s support.
Happy with the results of election, EVA’s board disbanded the organization, now memorialized in the street name Eva Road, which was built soon after Etobicoke’s new civic centre opened on the West Mall in 1957.
