Smithfield Post Office Was Named ‘Etobicoke’.
The small crossroads village of Smithfield first got a post office in 1899, although it was named “Etobicoke” because “Smithfield” was already in use elsewhere. When this photo was taken in 1915, the postmaster was William Wright, seen standing at the far left, with his wife Emma beside him. Their daughter Carol is in the wagon, holding the reins. The post office was located on the southwest corner of Albion Road and Martin Grove Road, in the log store you can see built on the side of an old farmhouse. This post office had a short life and closed in 1927. (Courtesy: Montgomery’s Inn)
