On October 25, 2024 Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation celebrated the re-opening of their historic Council House. The Etobicoke Historical Society was honoured to be invited to this important event to both celebrate the re-opening of the Council House and as an expression of the close relationship between the MCFN and the EHS. Mireille Macia, President of the EHS attended on behalf of the Board.
Chief Claire Sault welcomed people to the ribbon cutting ceremony that included past Chiefs, as well as the first female elected to council, Carol Tobicoe, Honourable Arif Virani Minister of Justice, Attorney General of Canada and Member of Parliament for Parkdale-High Park.
The Council House was built in 1882 and has served as a seat of Anishinaabe governance as well as a gathering place for MCFN members for over a century. MCFN received contributions from FedDev Ontario, the MCFN Community Trust and the Ontario Trillium Foundation as well as modest contributions from the EHS.
