Long Branch Rifle Ranges Served as Training Grounds for Canadian Soldiers
In 1891, the Ontario Rifle Association and the Canadian Government established the Long Branch Rifle Ranges on land along Lake Ontario, west of Etobicoke Creek, which straddled both Etobicoke Township and Toronto Township (now Mississauga.) When World War I began, Long Branch Camp was established on this site and used as a training centre for many Canadian soldiers. In this photo, taken in mid-1915, “C” Company of the 48th Highlanders is doing a final full dress parade before going overseas. This land is now west of Marie Curtis Park in an area called Lakeshore Park. (Courtesy: Toronto Archives)
