Mural  #3

"Islington - The way we were, Part II" by John Kuna, 2006

This mural is located at 4984 Dundas, directly opposite Mural 2.

Like bookends, they flank a little plaza and together form a unique historical diorama with the first mural looking east and this one looking west along Dundas Street.

In keeping with the "Window to the Past" theme, mural 3 shows the old Islington Hotel
and drive shed as well as neighbouring shops then located on
the north side of Dundas Street at Burnhamthorpe Road.

The Islington Burying Grounds are seen in the distance and in the foreground
workers are depicted preparing the road to be paved in the ongoing
development of Islington as a thriving community.

In 1912 Burnhamthorpe Road was located west of its present location.

As shown in the mural, it ran between the Islington Hotel and Clayton's Butcher Shop.

The hotel's drive shed stretched across the current intersection
which has now been reconfigured to connect Burnhamthorpe Road and Cordova Avenue.

This mural was financed in Part by a grant from:
Toronto Economic Development.
Community partners include Village Paint, Paint Co for Wall Preparation
and Scaffold Russ Dilworth.

Special thanks to Mr. John Gillelan who paid to have the graffiti removed from Mural 2
and to Maxemum Property Management, the Fox and Fiddle and Rogers TV
for hosting fund-raisers for this project.
